Survey shows most Australians oppose greyhound racing
As my local Member of Parliament, I am writing to you about an issue of great importance to me - the millions of taxpayer dollars that is given away each year to the greyhound racing industry. The Australian greyhound racing industry causes the death and suffering of thousands of dogs every year. In 2022, over 200 dogs were killed on racetracks and over 10,000 dogs were injured. The industry is breeding six times more dogs than it can rehome and reports of doping, abuse and live baiting continue to appear on a regular basis. The taxpayer money gifted to this industry would be much better spent on fixing roads, healthcare, education, aged care and other areas that are critical to the entire community. Particularly as the industry is already funded with millions of dollars from gambling companies. Many of these are international companies who pay very little tax in Australia and send their profits overseas. Australians also suffer the highest gambling losses in the world. And the social costs are enormous, affecting not only the people involved but their families and the wider community. The approach often used by the racing industry to arrive at their economic contribution to the Australian economy is flawed and has been described by the Tasmanian Treasury as "unreliable and problematic". Employment figures are also inflated with only around 10,000 people employed by the animal racing industry across Australia according to the most recent census. There is no longer any justification for the addiction to betting revenue that has led to politicians turning a blind eye to the suffering of racing greyhounds. It is time that state governments stopped relying on this blood money and listen to what voters are saying. This is borne out by the first national Australia survey of attitudes towards dog racing, as reported by The Guardian. The survey found that the majority of Australians oppose greyhound racing and an even larger majority want to end taxpayer funding of the greyhound racing industry. Given this widespread public opposition to greyhound racing, will you commit to support an end to taxpayer funding of the greyhound racing industry, and advocate for your parliamentary colleagues to support you?
