Help needed to protect greyhounds from heatwave conditions
Greyhound Racing South Australia is currently violating its own heat policy and forcing greyhounds to race in extreme temperatures. Given there is an SA heatwave warning currently in place, I am writing to ask for your help as a matter of urgency. The GRSA heat policy only recently required that racing and events are rescheduled or abandoned on days when the temperature exceeds 38°C. On 10 March at Mt Gambier, greyhounds were forced to race in temperatures of up to 39.2°C. This was in direct contravention of the GRSA heat policy. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) had also issued a three day heatwave warning for South Australia commencing 9 March. This included a “Severe Heatwave” warning for the Lower South East area including Mt Gambier. Late last year, your government warned the SA greyhound racing industry that it will be banned if it is unable to improve its animal welfare and integrity standards within two years. Three months later the industry is already proving itself incapable of reform or adhering to it own animal welfare policies. While I support a ban on greyhound racing, I would like to acknowledge the SA government's attempt to improve the lives of SA greyhounds. In line with this, I urge you to immediately take the following action to protect SA greyhounds from the very real possibility of heat-stress, heat-stroke and collapse. - Cancel all greyhound races and greyhound events scheduled for those days where a BOM heatwave warning is in place. - Implement mandatory air-conditioning in all trailers used to transport greyhounds. - Monitor compliance by GRSA with all aspects of the heat policy. - Establish penalties sufficient to ensure that GRSA, SA greyhound racing clubs, and SA industry participants adhere to all aspects of the GRSA heat policy including the additional regulations above. I look forward to your response.
